Webster’s Fine Stationers: Profile

coverw7

I recently walked into Webster’s Fine Stationers to find out a little more dsc07135about their independently owned business. I barely got through the door before I heard “grab a cup of coffee!”. At the table by my side, complimentary coffee (from local Pasadena Coffee Co.) was made available. I grabbed a cup and  proceeded to peruse quirky notepads, one-of-a-kind greeting cards, office supplies, and, my favorite aisle, a surplus of pens and pencils, all colors of the rainbow.

dsc07139 Store owners, Lori and Scott Webster, opened the doors to their remodeled shop in October of 2007. Their mission is to build community while bolstering local economy by providing office supplies, stationary and novelty gift items. Participating in a toy drive for Five Acres (Altadena locals) around the Holidays is just one way they give back to the community and, being locally owned, a greater portion of their tax dollars go directly back  into the city.

The Websters currently employ 4 locals who, along with incoming customers, are Lori and Scott’s favorite part of the job. Finding exactly what you need is their priority and they take the time to inquire how they can be of better service to make the store an even more user friendly and welcoming place to shop.

Webster’s Fine Stationers is a family owned business located in the heart of Altadena, CA and, their mission?, to serve. Whether you have a question about note cards, envelopes (their most popular item), stationary or stamps – Webster’s has the answer…and a whole lot of heart.

NYT: Resilient in Hard Times: The Family Business

There’s an encouraging article by Jane Birnbaum in the New York Times today about the resiliency of small and family-run businesses during tough economic times. Go locals! We can do it!

In tough times, family businesses can pull together in ways that ventures with unrelated workers may not do as easily. “A family business can become like a turtle that pulls inward under its shell,” said Patricia M. Cole, an associate professor of family business and family therapy at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Green Street Photo Lab – 10 Years & Going Strong

In October of 1998, three photography connoisseurs, Michael Ruscetta, Fifi Sulaiman, and Frank Noack, decided to open a boutique professional photo lab that would focus on quality printing and intimate customer service. They discovered a classic storefront with a rear studio space on picturesque Green Street and opened up shop – business boomed. Ten years later, the wonderful Green Street Photo Lab is still going strong.

Believe it or not, Green Street Photo Lab is actually the last standing professional independent photo lab in Pasadena, and it’s no secret why they’ve survived the photo industry’s swift transition from mostly film to mostly digital. In the last several years, roughly 12 photo labs in Pasadena have had to shut their doors. Yet owners Michael, Fifi, and Frank believe they’ve survived because they cater to both pro shooters who still cherish the luminosity and aesthetic quality of film and whom want premium enlargements made in-house by master printer Sulaiman, as well as to amateur shooters who value the one-on-one customer service available at Green Street for getting their digital prints made. After all, the best photographers know that hard-drives don’t last forever – you have to get those images printed!

So whether you’ve decided to experiment once again with film (film is not dead!), or you’ve got cds full of last year’s travel and family photos, pop by Buy Local Pasadena member Green Street Photo Lab and you will not be disappointed. Their prices are competitive, they’ve never ever lost a roll of film, and they actually color correct each and every print made – film and digital. Most drugstore and online printers do not offer such quality. When you’re there chances are not one, but all 3 of Green Street’s owners will be on hand to help you, along with their resident dog Lui!

Fiesta At Ten Thousand Villages of Pasadena
Ten Thousand Villages of Pasadena is planning a sizzling summer celebration to mark the second anniversary of selling fair trade products at their store, located at 496 S. Lake Ave, in Pasadena. The fiesta will take place this Saturday, July 5th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Drinks and light food will be served and a free gift will be given with every purchase made. A performance and presentation by Mojácar Flamenco will take place at 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pasadena-based Mojácar Flamenco is a dynamic group of flamenco artists led by guitarist Stephen Dick and dance dynamo Katerina Tomás. Together, they offer a virtuosic tour-de-force in which music and dance weave together in tight interplay.
Globally, Ten Thousand Villages works with over 100 artisan groups in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring fair trade jewelry, home décor, gifts and more to the U.S. and Canada. There are 160 retail stores in North America and all of the locations are nonprofit organizations staffed mostly by volunteers. Fair trade enables artisans from around the world to earn a fair wage and provides the opportunity for a better quality of life.
Recently, Ten Thousand Villages was named one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” by the Ethisphere Institute and Forbes Magazine. For more information about the event, please call  626.229.9892.

Local Businesses & Summer Youth Jobs
June 28, 2008, 3:58 pm

City of PasadenaThe City of Pasadena has an amazing program called Summer ROSE (Realizing Opportunities in Summer Employment) that offers a financial incentive for local businesses to employ eligible youth workers for the summer of 2008. This is a great opportunity for a local business to hire Pasadena youth and have all or a portion of the salary subsidized by the City. The jobs will begin as early as July 7 and may run as late as Aug. 31. The city is still looking for local independent businesses for this program, so if you’re a local biz (other than a home-based business) in need of summer help, click here or email info@buylocalpasadena.org for application instructions.
